MOORESVILLE – Lowe’s Foundation launched a national coalition with more than 75 organizations aimed at helping train and develop 1 million people for skilled-trades careers by 2035.

The Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition’s corporate founding members include NVIDIA, AT&T, Bank of America, Carrier, General Motors, DEWALT and Duke Energy. Other members include the National Association of Home Builders, the National Center for Construction Education and Research, SkillsUSA and Carhartt.

The coalition plans to work on changing perceptions of skilled-trades careers, expanding training and credentialing programs and establishing shared measures that track progress from training to employment.

The initiative builds on the foundation’s Gable Grants network, which includes 73 community colleges and nonprofit organizations across 30 states. Lowe’s Foundation previously announced a separate $250 million commitment to help train and develop 250,000 tradespeople by 2035.

The Sept. 1 coalition announcement did not include a new funding commitment or a North Carolina-specific training allocation. Lowe’s operates its corporate campus in Mooresville. Two of the coalition’s other corporate founding members, Bank of America and Duke Energy, are headquartered in Charlotte.
