RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation has completed improvements at three North Raleigh intersections on U.S. 401, opening the corridor nearly one year ahead of schedule.
Work at Perry Creek Road, Mitchell Mill Road and Ligon Mill Road began in summer 2023 and is now complete, according to NCDOT.
The project added a reduced-conflict intersection at Perry Creek Road. Drivers entering U.S. 401 from Perry Creek Road turn right and use signalized median U-turns for other directions.
At Mitchell Mill Road, NCDOT built a continuous-flow intersection that moves some left-turning traffic across opposing lanes before the main intersection. The agency said it is the second continuous-flow intersection in North Carolina.
The Ligon Mill Road intersection was relocated north of Mitchell Mill Road to separate the two junctions and reduce congestion.
NCDOT’s project page identifies the work as State Transportation Improvement Program project U-5748 and lists an estimated total cost of $37,336,500. That figure includes $2,636,500 for right of way and utilities and $34.7 million for construction.
The project page says approximately 59,800 vehicles travel through the area each day and forecasts approximately 93,200 vehicles per day by 2040.
