CHARLOTTE – Atrium Health has committed $340 million over five years to expand behavioral-health care, including a 168-bed hospital location in north Charlotte that would add 102 beds and is expected to open in 2028.

Atrium said it plans to renovate an existing building in the University City area near Mallard Creek rather than construct a facility from the ground up. The health system expects the renovation approach to bring the new location online 12 to 18 months sooner.

The planned location would serve pediatric and adult patients. The broader investment also includes a behavioral-health emergency department, an expanded crisis-stabilization unit and additional outpatient therapy, medication-management and intensive-treatment programs.

Atrium projects the hospital location will support 35,000 additional inpatient days each year. It also expects expanded outpatient clinics to handle more than 19,500 additional visits annually.

The health system said behavioral-health emergency visits across its Charlotte-area network increased 13% during the past six years, with adolescents accounting for 17% of those visits. Atrium reported treating nearly 2,000 pediatric patients through inpatient care and nearly 20,000 pediatric patients through outpatient care in 2025.

The five-year commitment extends beyond the building. It includes workforce development, expansion of Atrium’s psychiatry residency and adolescent fellowship programs, a planned addiction fellowship, community outreach and virtual care. Atrium did not disclose a job count, a construction contract or how much of the $340 million is allocated specifically to the hospital location.

Business North Carolina independently reported the investment and the planned 168-bed location, which Atrium says will serve a region stretching from York County, South Carolina, to the Triad. WFAE separately corroborated the $340 million commitment, the net addition of 102 beds and the 2028 target.

The announcement is a capital commitment and development plan; the facility is not yet operating. Atrium said services are expected to begin in 2028.
