ASHEBORO – Bossong Hosiery Mills has permanently closed its Asheboro manufacturing operation, eliminating 122 jobs, according to a state WARN filing.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce lists Sept. 9 as the notice and effective date for the closure. The state received the notice Sept. 11 and classifies the shutdown at 840 West Salisbury Street as permanent.
Before the closure, Bossong described itself as a privately held, third-generation family business that had manufactured circular-knit products in Asheboro since 1927. Its product lines included medical compression hosiery, fashion hosiery and other knitted products for private-label and original-equipment customers.
The shutdown follows an effort to raise capital from the property. Randolph Hub reported Aug. 10 that Bossong planned to sell its 131,536-square-foot manufacturing campus for $5.65 million and lease back 92,768 square feet for 10 years. Company president Huntley Bossong told the publication at that time that the business employed about 150 people and was smaller than in previous years.
The state WARN record does not provide a reason for the closure. The filing represents a completed employment loss rather than a proposed reduction or future closure.
