SANFORD — Caterpillar is allocating up to $10 million for a North Carolina workforce initiative led with Central Carolina Community College and the Sanford Area Growth Alliance, expanding training for modern manufacturing and industry-technician roles.

The allocation is part of Caterpillar’s five-year, $100 million Building the Future Workforce Initiative. The company described the North Carolina commitment as the sixth allocation made through that broader program.

Caterpillar said the North Carolina work will expand hands-on manufacturing pathways for students, increase employer participation and connect more people with affordable training intended to support career advancement.

Central Carolina Community College and the Sanford Area Growth Alliance will help carry out the initiative. The company did not disclose a final disbursement schedule, participant target, job-placement goal or allocation by partner in the available announcement.

Caterpillar said it employs more than 3,600 people in North Carolina and works with 325 suppliers across the state. The company also operates in Clayton and previously announced a separate plan to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina manufacturing capacity, including a new Sanford facility.

The workforce allocation is a later and distinct commitment. It should not be counted as part of the previously announced manufacturing capital plan unless Caterpillar provides a controlling record that connects the two budgets.

Canadian Mining Journal independently reported the up-to-$10 million allocation and its focus on modern manufacturing and industry-technician training.

The immediate North Carolina business consequence is new workforce-development funding tied to a large manufacturer, a community college and a regional economic-development organization. The program is intended to expand the pipeline of workers prepared for advanced-manufacturing roles, but the available sources do not establish how many people will complete training or move into jobs.
