GASTONIA — Gaston County commissioners approved the county’s highest-level incentive for Project Legacy, an unidentified company considering $70 million to $75 million in local investment and at least 150 jobs.
The board acted after a Sept. 22 public hearing. The official meeting video is indexed directly to the Project Legacy item. The county’s posted minutes were still marked draft on Sept. 23, but Charlotte Business Journal independently reported the completed approval and said the county is competing with South Carolina for the project.
The county’s legislative file says Project Legacy is considering approximately $70 million to $75 million in real estate, machinery and equipment in Gaston County. It anticipates creating at least 150 jobs with average annual salaries above the county’s $54,736 average annual wage.
The Level Four grant would be a performance-based reimbursement from property taxes paid by the company. The county said there is no immediate budget impact. If Project Legacy chooses Gaston County, the company would enter an economic-development agreement with the county and the selected municipality.
Grant eligibility would depend on completed taxable investment, timely payment of property taxes and compliance with the application and recorded agreement. County staff would determine the qualifying net new taxable value after project development, and annual grant payments would be budgeted later.
The public file does not identify the company, a Gaston County site or the specific type of operation. No incentive value, construction timetable or final location decision was disclosed. The approval therefore creates a county offer for a competitive project; it does not announce that the company has selected North Carolina or guarantee the investment and jobs.
The business consequence is the scale of the prospect and the completed public action: Gaston County now has authority to negotiate a conditional agreement for a project that could add at least 150 above-average-wage jobs and up to $75 million in taxable investment.
