MATTHEWS – Harris Teeter plans to invest approximately $253 million over three years to modernize Charlotte-region stores and develop three new locations.
The Matthews-based Kroger subsidiary said the program spans communities in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Renovations and other enhancements are planned at stores in Matthews, Waxhaw, Concord and Huntersville, along with Fort Mill and Rock Hill, South Carolina, and other locations in the region.
Three new stores are planned for Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Fort Mill and Lake Wylie, South Carolina. Harris Teeter did not provide opening dates or a breakdown of the investment by state, store or project.
The scope will vary by location. Planned work may include expanded fresh, bakery and prepared-food offerings; updated layouts and fixtures; exterior, parking-area and shopping-cart improvements; faster pickup and delivery services; and new decor and signage.
Harris Teeter said the updates will roll out in phases during the next three years. Renovated stores are expected to begin holding grand-reopening events this fall as individual projects are completed.
The company traces its Charlotte-area roots to 1936, when W.T. Harris opened his first grocery store. Harris Teeter was formed in 1960 through the combination of the Harris and Teeter businesses and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co.
The announcement did not include a projected job count. Harris Teeter said the capital program is intended to update its existing regional footprint while adding the three planned stores.
