RALEIGH – The North Carolina Investment Authority reported more than $219 billion in assets under management as of June, including $150 billion in state retirement-system assets.
The authority said Aug. 28 that total assets had increased from $190.5 billion in December 2024. The North Carolina Retirement Systems crossed the $150 billion mark Aug. 18, with most of the increase over the previous year attributed to gains from equity holdings.
Outside the retirement systems, the authority reported approximately $45.6 billion in cash-management assets, including Treasury bills, notes and other money-market investments. It also reported $21.5 billion in supplemental retirement plans and $3.3 billion in other categories.
For the year ended June 2026, the retirement systems earned 12.41% after fees and expenses, compared with a 6.5% annual performance benchmark, according to the authority.
The General Assembly created the authority through the 2025 State Investment Modernization Act. The agency is located within the Department of State Treasurer and operates independently from the department’s fiscal control. State Treasurer Brad Briner chairs its board.
