CHARLOTTE — Duke Health and CaroMont Health have applied for state approval to build two hospitals totaling 200 beds in Mecklenburg County through a new jointly owned company, a proposal that would expand hospital capacity and competition in University City and the River District.
The health systems submitted two Certificate of Need applications: a 120-bed hospital in the University City area near Mallard Creek Church Road and Interstate 85, and an 80-bed hospital in the River District near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
North Carolina’s 2026 State Medical Facilities Plan identified a need for 389 additional hospital beds in Mecklenburg County. The two proposals would cover just over half of that identified need if the state approves the applications and the organizations complete the projects.
A new company equally owned and jointly led by Duke Health and CaroMont would own and operate the hospitals. The two health systems would otherwise remain independent, and their existing facilities and services would continue separately.
WFAE reported that the proposal is the latest health-system combination aimed at expanding in Charlotte’s increasingly competitive hospital market. The northern and western locations would place more advanced care outside the county’s central hospital cluster.
The applications are proposals under state review, not approved construction projects. Duke Health and CaroMont expect a decision by the end of March 2027. If the applications are approved and development proceeds as planned, the hospitals could open in 2031.
The health systems have not finalized the services planned for each campus. The available sources do not disclose construction costs, job counts, financing terms or a construction start date, so this report does not infer them.
The immediate North Carolina business consequence is a proposed 200-bed expansion by two established health systems through a new jointly owned company. Approval would add hospital capacity in two fast-growing parts of Mecklenburg County and introduce another large provider combination into the Charlotte market.
