WINSTON-SALEM – Novant Health plans to sell 36 South Carolina urgent care locations to Prisma Health in a transaction involving approximately 500 team members and expected to close Nov. 1.

SCBiz reported that Prisma announced the agreement Sept. 24. The locations formerly operated under the Doctors Care name and are expected to become Prisma Health Urgent Care centers after closing. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The report said most centers are expected to remain at their current locations, although a small number may be combined with nearby facilities. Prisma said its goal is to retain urgent care team members affected by any consolidation. South Carolina Public Radio independently reported the 36-site transaction, approximately 500 affected medical staff and the expected Nov. 1 closing date.

The planned sale would unwind most of an urgent care portfolio Novant acquired less than two years earlier. Novant Health’s audited 2024 financial statements say the Winston-Salem-based system paid $79.403 million in cash for UCI Medical Affiliates on Nov. 1, 2024. That purchase included 52 urgent care clinics and 20 physical therapy clinics.

The 36-site agreement therefore covers most of the urgent care clinics in the earlier UCI purchase. The announcement did not say that the remaining urgent care centers or the physical therapy clinics are part of the Prisma transaction, and the $79.403 million historical purchase price should not be treated as the value of the proposed sale.

For Novant, the transaction would reduce its South Carolina urgent care footprint while leaving other operations in the state, including its coastal hospitals, outside the announced deal. No North Carolina layoffs, sale proceeds or changes to Novant’s North Carolina facilities were disclosed.
