PITTSBORO — Southern Land Company announced Sept. 22 that it plans a 1,271-acre master-planned community and private golf club inside Chatham Park, a proposal that would add a major new residential and recreation footprint to Chatham County’s growth corridor.
The Nashville-based developer said the golf component would include an 18-hole course, a nine-hole short course and learning and practice facilities designed by Tom Fazio’s Fazio Golf Design. The project would be built within Chatham Park, an 8,500-acre master-planned development in Pittsboro, about 30 miles from Raleigh. Preston Development Company is developing Chatham Park.
The Southern Land project remains in the planning and visioning stages. The company did not announce a home count, a project-specific investment total, a construction start, a completion date or a job count. Southern Land’s broader national project pipeline, which the company values at more than $5 billion, is not the budget for the Pittsboro proposal.
Triangle Business Journal independently reported the planned community and multi-course golf project on Sept. 21, before the developer’s announcement. Its report identified Southern Land and Fazio and placed the project at roughly 1,270 acres, corroborating the central scope through an independently controlled news organization.
The scale is the business consequence: Southern Land would bring another national developer and a large new residential-development footprint into the Chatham Park pipeline. But the announcement is a development plan, not a construction start, project approval or completed investment.
