WINSTON-SALEM – Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist has named longtime surgeon and health-system leader Matthew Edwards area president and chief executive officer, effective Sept. 14.
Edwards also will serve as executive vice president for clinical health affairs at Wake Forest University.
As CEO, Edwards will direct the Winston-Salem-based academic health system’s strategic, clinical and operational work. He also will oversee efforts to align clinical and academic priorities with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, according to the organization.
Edwards has worked at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist for more than 30 years. He most recently served as chief physician executive for the health system’s area and is a professor of vascular and endovascular surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
His prior roles include chair of vascular and endovascular surgery and chief of surgical operations. He completed general-surgery and vascular-surgery residency training at Wake Forest Baptist and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters.
Edwards succeeds Craig Greven, a professor of ophthalmology who has served as interim CEO since April. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is part of Advocate Health.
The organization announced the appointment Sept. 3. It did not disclose compensation or additional executive changes.
